Mexican authorities are outraged! They are ready to take retaliatory measures if Donald Trump, the incoming US president, follows through with his threat to impose tariffs on Mexican goods. According to Claudia Sheinbaum, the head of state, the Mexican government is prepared to "mirror" any US tariffs if they are enacted.

"One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses," Sheinbaum warned, referring to American automakers with factories on both sides of the border.

To recall, President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods if the country did not curb the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States.

"Caravans of migrants no longer reach the border," Sheinbaum stated, noting that Mexico had made significant efforts to halt the flow of illegal migrants. In her response to the Republican, she pointed out that drug trafficking is an American problem, not a Mexican one. At the same time, Sheinbaum expressed hope that both sides would reach an agreement.

During Trump's first term, relations with Mexico were notably strained. On November 6, 2024, the day of his re-election, the Mexican peso plummeted against the dollar, weighed down by the heightened risk of potential tariffs on Mexican goods. Earlier this year, the Mexican peso was regarded as the world's best-performing currency, but the situation has now changed.
